Emergency excellence. Spotlight: Dr. Dane Mitteness, Chief Medical Officer and Emergency Physician at Alomere Health With generations of family in healthcare as chiropractors, it was natural for Dr. Mitteness to choose a career in medicine, it was in his blood. But his path to being a doctor was interrupted by War. As a first-year undergrad student, Dr. Mitteness watched the intense "Shock and Awe" of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Feeling a deep sense of duty, he paused his studies to enlist in the military. Four years later, after active duty and time in the National Guard, he used his GI Bill to return to school, bringing with him invaluable battlefield experience. That experience- especially in triage and high- pressure decision-making-led him to specialize in Emergency Medicine. Today, Dr. Mitteness serves as Alomere Health's Chief Medical Officer and helps staff the Emer- gency Department, while still serving in the National Guard. It's a balancing act, but one he embraces with dedication to both healthcare and service. "At Alomere Health, we run the busiest Level III Trauma Center in the state, treating over 17,000 patients each year," Dr. Mitte- ness says proudly. "What makes us stand out? We're committed to staffing our ER with board- certified emergency providers -doctors who've completed at least 11 years of medical educa- tion, including three years in emergency care. If you're board-certified, you can work anywhere in the country. Here, you're at the top of your game." Triage, a skill honed during his military service, is a cornerstone of Alomere's ER care. "When you come into the ER, we want the sickest patients to get care first. If you're asked to wait, it can be good news-it means your condition probably isn't life-threatening, and someone more critical is receiving imme- diate attention." The ER is equipped with state- of-the-art technology, like a bedside Ultrasound Machine and a LUCAS chest compression machine, which frees up staff to focus on other critical tasks while delivering life-saving CPR. Alomere's Stroke Program, in partnership with CentraCare's neurology team, ensures fast, expert care. "We can send a CT scan, and within 20 minutes, we're having a live consult with a neurologist to get the treat- ment started right away," Dr. Mitteness explains. Eight years ago, Dr. Mitteness and his family intentionally chose Alexandria, seeking a place where he could truly make a difference. "I didn't want to be just another cog in the machine. At Alomere Health, my voice is heard. I'm able to impact not just my department, but the whole community." When not working, Dr. Mitteness and his family enjoy all the outdoor activities Alexandria offers from hunting in the fall to skiing in the winter and boating in the summer. "But be careful on the lake! The space between the boat and dock is a common reason we see trauma in the ER during the summer," he laughs. Alomere's Emergency Depart- ment is hiring.
