SEPA EPA Begins Review of LaGrand Sanitary Landfill Site LaGrand Township, Minnesota U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a five-year review of the LaGrand Sanitary Landfill Superfund site located eight miles west of Alexandria and approximately three miles south Garfield in Douglas County. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up with waste managed on-site to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the fifth five-year review of this site Cleanup and ongoing operations at the LaGrand Sanitary Landfill are managed by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency under its Closed Landfill Program. The cleanup was completed in 1994 and consisted of covering exposed waste, installing gas vents, sealing an on-site well, reconstructing a borrow pit, controlling future use of the property and maintaining the landfill cover. More recently, MPCA installed a new cap on the landfill and upgraded the gas venting system More information is available at the MPCA office, 520 Lafayette Road N., St. Paul, and at www.epa.gov/superfund/lagrand-sanitary-landfill. The review should be completed this summer. The five-year review is an opportunity for you to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have.
