Spotlight: Demetra Heinrich, MD At the age of 15, Demetra was experiencing severe lower abdominal pain. She put up with it for months, but it became so intense she was eventually forced to seek medical help. She was rushed into surgery to remove the 16cm tumor on her left ovary. "That surgery saved my life," recalls Demetra, Experiencing first hand the life-saving impact the obstetri- cian performing the surgery was able to give her, Demetra knew at that moment she wanted to be an OB-GYN. Her first experience providing care brought her to Kenya where she and her husband (a Minne- sota native) served together for a year at an orphanage. Struck by how dangerous labor can be for women (even in America), convinced her to pursue a career in Women's Health. She entered medical school in Seattle the following year. For her residency, the couple was happy to move to Minnesota and complete her education at the University of Minnesota. One of her residency rotations paired her with Dr. Sprengeler. Now united again at Alomere, the two OB-GYNs are collabo- rating once again-albeit with very different approaches. "Dr. Sprengeler is very experienced and intuitive, I am very evidence based, so we really complement each other well." Drs. Heinrich, Sprengeler, and Wilson embrace the addition of Dr. Docken, the fourth OB-GYN to join Alomere. "With a larger Women's Health team, we'll be able to expand our ultrasound, pelvic floor, fertility, and infertili- ty services," says Dr. Heinrich. Dr. Heinrich is quick to point out that even though her depart- ment is growing, Alomere is still at a size that is nimble, and that's a big reason why she was attracted to work here. "It's hard to effect change in a big system. Here, you can talk to everyone and make changes if necessary. For instance, we run emergency simulations. Pharmacy, lab, radiology, nurses, and physi- cians are all involved. If we find something isn't working, we're able to make it better," says Dr. Heinrich. A passion for Women's Health. Since both Dr. Heinrich and her husband grew up in smaller communities, they have always wanted a rural lifestyle. With four boys (all under the age of 10) and a successful practice, Dr. Heinrich is very busy- and happy-building a family and practice in lake country.
